FAQ about HYPNOTHERAPY

Q: What exactly is hypnosis?
A: Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation which allows access to the subconscious part of the mind. The Hypnotherapist uses his/her voice to guide the client through relaxation and visualisation.

Q: What does it feel like to be in hypnosis?
Hypnosis feels rather like a daydream. It is a pleasantly relaxed, natural state of calmness.

Q: Is hypnotherapy safe?
Yes. The client remains in control and learns self hypnosis. The suggestions given by the therapist are positive and in keeping with the clients wishes. Hypnotherapy is based on teamwork and trust. A client cannot be forced to do something which is against their will.

Q: Is Hypnotherapy only for people with problems?
A: No. Hypnotherapy is also beneficial for improving performance and focussing on personal goals. Hypnotherapy is effective in helping people to stop smoking and lose weight.

Q: What is the most common reason for having hypnotherapy?
A: Contrary to what many people believe, and according to my experience, it is mostly people suffering from anxiety or panic attacks who come for hypnotherapy. People experience anxiety about examinations, interviews, giving speeches/presentations, about relationships, or about the future.
Hypnotherapy helps people to relax, challenge negativity and manage anxiety and panic attacks.

Q: What sort of phobias can hypnotherapy help with?
A; Fear of flying is quite common. There are many fears, but hypnotherapy can help clients to overcome anxiety and phobias by facing their fears and challenging their negative thoughts.

Q: What sort of techniques do you teach people?
A: I use the techniques of hypnosis such as relaxation and visualisation. Visualisation can be very powerful. If you believe that you can do something (such as overcome fears, stop smoking and lose weight) then you are much more likely to succeed. Hypnotherapy helps clients to recognise that the negative thoughts are just thoughts; they're not reality. Hypnotherapy raises self-esteem and helps develop a positive perspective.

Q: Do you record sessions?
A: Hypnosis sessions are usually recorded so that the client can learn the techniques of self hypnosis. Suggestions are strengthened when they are repeated.

Q: Is Hypnotherapy anything like stage hypnotism?
A: No. Hypnotherapy is not the same as stage hypnotism. I have no personal objection to entertainment hypnotism so long as people aren't humiliated in the process.

Q: What do you mean by keeping a positive perspective?
A: Of course it does not mean always smiling and being happy. Hypnotherapy helps people to recognise their achievements, skills and talents and to work towards their personal goals.
A positive perspective means focussing on inner strengths and discovering solutions to problems.
Hypnosis helps to reduce mental and physical tension and anxiety.

Q: Would Hypnotherapy replace a doctor's treatment?
A: No, although it might work alongside it. Clients often notice an improvement in their feelings after a course of hypnotherapy sessions. They develop confidence in the techniques they have learned so that medication is no longer required, but decisions regarding medication would have to be discussed with their G.P.

Q: Do you find many differences between people?
A: I think that we all know what it feels like to become anxious and fearful and to suffer from grief and loss, but we also know what it is like to feel love, happiness, excitement and joy. These are common elements of human experience.

Q: Do you do past-life regression?
A: No. If someone were interested in past life regression then I would recommend that they seek a therapist who specialises in that particular area. I believe that what is important is living fully in this life.

STRESS MANAGEMENT

Stress is unavoidable but some stress (positive stress) is good for us because it can increase motivation and performance. It can be exciting,
stimulating and creative.
Long term negative stress though is likely to be harmful.

Some common symptoms of stress are:
Breathing too quickly
Raised blood pressure
Tense muscles
Headaches
Sleeping problems
Anxiety and panic attacks
Irritability
loss of confidence/motivation
Confused mind affecting memory and concentration.

Stress can be managed by learning how to relax both the body and mind and by changing reactions
to stressful situations. We can learn how to regain control over our lives and this increase our level of confidence and motivation.
